Many people ask if chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy. The answer is yes, and it may be one of the most important times to be under care. During the course of a pregnancy the mother can gain 35 pounds, much of it coming in the last few months. Her body will also produce a hormone called relaxin. This will loosen ligaments and cause laxity in her joints. This combination can cause muscles to become tight and sore, improper posture, improper hip and pelvis biomechanics, and back pain during pregnancy.
Chiropractic has a safe, well researched technique that is utilized on expecting mothers called the Webster Technique. The goal of this technique is to reduce the effects of sacral/SI subluxations. In doing so, the neuro-biomechanical of the pelvis is improved as well as secondary symptoms such as back pain during pregnancy. This has been shown to improve dystocia and breeched position of children. This is why care during a pregnancy is important, even if the mother is not experiencing any pain or other symptoms.
